A delegation of the National Bank of Moldova (NBM), led by Governor Anca Dragu, including members of the NBM Executive Committee, heads of subdivisions, as well as the EU High Level Adviser on financial services, Nicolae Grigore, paid a working visit at the European Banking Authority (EBA).
During the discussions with José Manuel Campa, the EBA Chairperson, the current developments in the banking sector of the Republic of Moldova and the regulatory and banking supervision priorities of the NBM from the perspective of the European Union accession process were presented.
Anca Dragu appreciated the cooperation between the NBM and the EBA, stating that the Moldovan financial sector has been significantly strengthened, especially due to the European integration process. The development of cooperation between the NBM and the banking supervisory authorities in the EU was possible after the confidentiality regime in the field of banking supervision in Moldova was positively evaluated by the EBA. The governor also stated that the NBM is interested in receiving the confirmation of the results of reforms it has promoted in the banking field. For this purpose, the NBM will initiate an evaluation exercise on the equivalence of the national banking legislation with the EU one, according to the EBA methodology.
During the discussions, Nicolae Grigore emphasized the positive developments recorded by the National Bank of Moldova regarding the supervisory process and procedures. Thanks to the EU supported twinning project those are now are aligned with the existing practices within the European Financial Supervision System.
During the discussions, the EBA Chairperson expressed openness on the part of the European Banking Authority for a closer cooperation with the NBM to help the central bank of the Republic of Moldova to advance on the path of European integration.
